The Indian Institutes
of Technology (popularly known as IITs) are institutions of national
importance established through an Act of Parliament for fostering excellence in
education. There are fifteen IITs at present, located in Bhubaneswar, Bombay
(Mumbai), Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Kanpur, Kharagpur,
Madras (Chennai), Mandi, Patna, Punjab, Rajasthan and Roorkee. Over the years
IITs have created world class educational platforms dynamically sustained
through internationally recognized research based on excellent infrastructural
facilities. The faculty and alumni of IITs continue making huge impact in all
sectors of society, both in India and abroad. Institute of Technology, Banaras
Hindu University (IT-BHU), Varanasi and Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad,
are the oldest institutions in India and are known for their immense
contributions towards society at large and for science and technology in
was established in 1958, at Powai, a northern suburb of Mumbai. Today the
Institute is recognised as one of the centres of academic excellence in the
country. Over the years, there has been dynamic progress at IIT Bombay in all
academic and research activities, and a parallel improvement in facilities and
infrastructure, to keep it on par with the best institutions in the world.
Institutes in positions of excellence grow with time. The ideas and ideals on
which such institutes are built evolve and change with national aspirations,
national perspectives, and trends world - wide. IIT Bombay, too, is one such
IIT, Guwahati: Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995.
At present the Institute has eleven departments covering all the major engineering and science disciplines, offering B. Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up the necessary infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments.

IIT Delhi is situated
at Hauz Khas in South Delhi, which is a landmark place in the colourful and
chequered history of Delhi. Bounded by the Sri Aurobindo Marg on the east, the
Jawaharlal Nehru University Complex on the west, the National Council of
Educational Research and Training on the south, and the New Ring Road on the
north, the Institute campus is flanked by Qutub Minar and the Hauz Khas
monuments. Well connected to the major city centres by open and wide roads, the
Institute campus is about 19 Km. away from the Delhi Main Railway Station, 14
Km. from the New Delhi Railway Station, 21 Km. from the Inter-State Bus Terminal
and 10 Km. from Delhi Airport.
Indian Institute of Technology Madras, is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research.
IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 460 faculty, 4500 students and 1250 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares. It has established itself as a premier centre for teaching, research and industrial consultancy in the country.
The Institute has fifteen academic departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning. A faculty of international repute, a brilliant student community, excellent technical & supporting staff and an effective administration have all contributed to the pre-eminent status of IIT Madras. The campus is located in the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is one of the premier institutions established by the Government of India. The aim of the Institute is to provide meaningful education, to conduct original research of the highest standard and to provide leadership in technological innovation for the industrial growth of the country. The Institute began functioning in the borrowed building of Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in 1959 with 100 students and a small faculty.
