There are several National and International events took place in India and abroad in the year 2010. On January 1st, Ninety-Five people are killed in a suicide attack during a volleyball match in Shah Hassan Khel in Lakki Marwat district in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province. On January 4th, Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest tower at 818 Metres (2,684 Feet), is opened by Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid al Maktoum. On January 12, At least 1,00,000 people are killed after a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastates the Caribbean nation of Haiti. On January 17, Jyoti Basu (95), veteran Marxist leader and Chief Minister of West Bengal for 23 years (June 1977 – November 2000) dies of septicaemia due to pneumonia resulting in multi-organ failure at a private hospital in Kolkata after battling for life over the last 17 days. He was an MLA from 1946-2001. He pledges his body to the SSKM Hospital. On January 25th, India's Civilian awards were announced. Padma Vibhushan for former RBI Governor, Y.V. Reddy, Prathap C. Reddy, Nobel laureate Venkataraman Ramakrishnan, Umayalpuram Sivaraman, Ebrahim Alkazi and Zohra Segal. Padma Bhushan for Ilaiyaraja, A.R. Rahman, Aamir Khan, Bipan Chandra and 39 others. Resul Pookutty, Virender Sehwag, Venu Srinivasan, Saina Nehwal among 81 Padma Shri awardees. On January 31, A.R. Rahman wins two Grammy awards for his song ‘Jai Ho’ and outstanding soundtrack for the film Slumdog Millionaire at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angels.
