Best companies to work for of 2009

Author: Christina Pomoni

Every employee dreams of an ideal working environment, with nice people to work with, fair management and high remuneration. Unfortunately, the reality is tough and not only environment is dull or sometimes even hostile, but paycheck is not enough to cover urgent expenses. However, even during the current financial and credit crisis, there are companies that stand out for their great organizational culture, atmosphere and environment, which make them the best companies to work for.

Google

Google is repeatedly included in the list with the best companies to work for and the reasons for this are numerous. The company offers its employees everything to make them feel at home and work hard. Free gourmet meals, massage, yoga classes, laundry facilities, dry cleaning, oil change, babysitting, hairdresser, swimming pool, volleyball courts, all are offered for free during working hours and make Google Corporation a really fascinating place. Google’s Human Resources receive nearly 1,300 resumes per day, which is explained by the fact that all these amenities make it difficult for employees to leave the office. But this is how the company justifies its expenses without raising its administrative costs.

Boston Consulting Group

Boston Consulting Group is considered one of the best companies to work for mostly for the benefits it offers to its employees. First of all, it has increased the percentage of recruited minorities to 25 percent of total staff as well as the percentage of trainee consultants. Offering first-class insurance, co-paying doctor visits and covering 100% fertility treatment, Boston Consulting Group consistently ranks on the top five companies to work for and has established an excellent reputation that attracts many candidates every year.

Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs is in the list of the best companies to work for, mostly because it is an equal employer that takes care of women and offers high salary jobs in the middle of a global financial and credit crisis. 3,000 employees were laid off, but more than 30 percent of female employees were promoted to partners and senior positions in the company, while numerous middle managers were offered exceptional career prospects. All these changes occurred in a competitive working environment, where salary and promotion matter, but not at the expense of teamwork and organizational vision. The company focuses on personal development and offers its employees a unique opportunity to shape their own careers with the expertise of Goldman Sachs.

Cisco

Almost similar like Google, Cisco offers its employees full-time child care for 400 children, medical and fitness centers under the same roof. Employees are provided regular checkups, physical therapy or anything that suits a particular case, while their children are offered pediatric checkups. What is more amazing is that children’s mothers are not necessarily Cisco’s employees. It takes at least one parent to be employed in the company to take advantage of these fantastic benefits. Currently, 85 percent of employees have a flexible time schedule under a formalized arrangement in order to be able to work and benefit from these benefits as well. Besides, Cisco’s top management aim at involving employees in the company’s decision-making in order to make the company even more competitive in the market and keeping employee satisfaction and loyalty in high levels.

Admittedly, there are numerous companies that one would consider as good companies to work for. Fortune magazine releases every year a relevant list and explains the pros of each company and why it is ranked higher or lower than previous year’s list. In any case, the good news is there are still good companies to work for; companies that care about their employees and consider human capital as their most important asset. In such turbulent times, with the global financial crisis threatening more and more households on a daily basis, it is good to know there is a company that offers laundry, dry cleaning and babysitting for free.
