I-Drop Technology

Welcome to the exciting world of i-drop® technology!

i-drop is a new technology invented by the developers at Autodesk which enables designers and developers to create web content giving your customers the ability to drag and drop design content from a web page directly into your design products.

For example, imagine that you are a lighting designer and require a specific fixture to embed within your AutoCAD or 3D Studio VIZ session. Now imagine that a lighting company like Erco has a website containing a library of its fixtures online from which you can browse, then drag and drop the appropriate fixture into your design session. Forget about the days of downloading, then inserting it. Now you can drag any DWG or VIZ files from an i-drop enabled website and drop its geometry directly into your Autodesk product.

Let's take it a step further. Besides geometry, what else would you like to see from a manufacturer? How about photometric data, cost information, materials, etc.? With the i-drop technology, all of this is now possible.

i-drop technology is XML-based, technology which makes its potential limitless as to what data it can carry besides the object's geometry. It is completely up to you, the designer.

Introduction to the i-drop ActiveX Control

In order to support the World Wide Web as a primary source of product information, Autodesk has introduced the i-drop(tm) ActiveX control enabling manufacturers and design professionals to publish and acquire design data using standard Web pages.

The i-drop ActiveX control is used to transfer content from the World Wide Web by means of a drag-and-drop operation. The content can be any type of file (such as geometry or raster files) that the content producer has made available and which the application will accept.

An i-drop object in a Web page is an open gateway between the content provider's server and the Autodesk® software user's desktop. Web pages that contain i-drop objects can be designed to look and behave exactly like a standard Web page in a standard Web browser. The user simply drags the i-drop object from the provider's Web page and drops it onto a desktop or into an application.

The desktop or application is the i-drop target. The i-drop target requests the data in one or more specific clipboard formats and receives the content. This is called being "i-drop aware." i-drop can also deliver data in any of the system default clipboard formats. What the application gets depends on the file. If the user drags to a text editor, the text editor takes textual data. What the desktop or application takes is independent of i-drop

Products that are currently i-drop® enabled

Since i-drop is a technology that is embedded into both the 2000i and 2002 platform, all Autodesk products that use this platform as a foundation can utilize i-drop. Inventor and 3D Studio VIZ are enabled with this technology as well.

Here is a listing of current applications that can use i-drop:

  • 3D Studio VIZ® Release 3i
  • AutoCAD® 2002
  • AutoCAD® 2000i
  • Autodesk Architectural Desktop 3.3
  • AutoCAD Architectural Desktop 3.0
  • AutoCAD Architectural Desktop 2i
  • Autodesk® CAD Overlay® 2002
