The Common Written Exam (CWE) for banking jobs is the online exam conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS)

In the last few years, IBPS has screened over 10 million candidates for testing and filled nearly 79,236 vacancies for its client organisations, besides testing candidates for admission to academic institutes and certification for diplomas.

Sources say there are nearly 80,000 vacancies in various PSU banks across the country, waiting to be filled up this year. The 19 public sector banks, excluding State Bank of India, have been recruiting candidates for various posts through the CWE conducted by the IBPS.

The exam tests the candidates on their basic reasoning abilities, mathematics, English and professional knowledge but many candidates fail to clear the test

Many engineering candidates  are turning to the public sector because they feel there is greater stability in the sector now.

About IPBS-Institute of Banking Personnel Selection : The journey of this Institute began in 1975, just after nationalization of banks, as Personnel Selection Services (PSS), a unit of National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM). The objective was to develop an unbiased and efficient system for recruitment, promotion and placement services. This prototype initiative was extended to provide these services with all the academic and operational inputs to the banking industry initially which now has been extended to non-banking sectors as well. In 1984 this unit became an independent entity – Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) at the behest of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Public Sector Banks. The first Chairman of its Governing Board was Dr Manmohan Singh, the then Governor of RBI. IBPS is envisioned as self governed academic and research oriented institute, with a mission of enhancing human resource development through personnel assessment.

The Institute is an autonomous body; registered as a Public Trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act of 1950; a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India and a centre for providing PhD in Management affiliated to the SNDT University.

The Institute also conducts interview skill training programmes to train interviewers in the art and science of conducting interviews. The objective behind conducting interviews is to check the inter-personal skills of candidates along with tacit knowledge about the job profile. It has a credible, skilled and experienced team of experts that is located in all metropolitan cities and state capitals of India. In the past two years, it has assessed more than 50,000 candidates through the process of interviews in more than 20 locations across the nation.
