MANAV JAIN: As the Non-Immigrant Visa Chief at the U.S. Consulate in Hyderabad, I am committed to ensuring that qualified students who wish to study in the United States have that opportunity. Last year, the U.S. Embassy and the four U.S. Consulates in India issued more than 20,000 student visas. More than one lakh Indian students are currently studying in the United States.

Visa officers regularly visit universities to talk to students about the visa process, often in tandem with the U.S.-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), which provides free, official information about choosing a university in the United States.

Study abroad can be a wonderful opportunity. Unfortunately, some have abused the student visa category to work illegally in the United States. Persons who try to obtain a student visa when their main intent is to work in the United States will often be refused by visa officers, who are trained to differentiate between bona fide students and people who are simply trying to work in the United States.

Parents can help children by discussing how a U.S. education fits into their career ambitions and making sure they are applying for visas with a genuine intent to study in the United States. They can assist children to access legitimate, official, and free information available from the U.S. Consulate and USIEF to make sure they choose an accredited, appropriate program that they can afford without resorting to illegal work or transferring to an unaccredited university. There are thousands of legitimate, credible universities in the United States, suited to a variety of budgets, and USIEF offers parents and students free assistance in selecting the perfect match.

Students who wish to work while studying should consult with legitimate sources such as USIEF. If students work while on student visas, their work must be relevant to their course of study and is permitted only for a limited amount of time. Immediate full-time work, especially if it is far from campus, is rarely permitted.

At the U.S. Consulate, there is nothing we appreciate more than the smile of a student whose visa has been approved and who will embark on the educational adventure of a lifetime. For free and official information on visas or selecting a university, visit the U.S. Consulate General Hyderabad website athttp://hyderabad.usconsulate.gov or USIEF and EducationUSA New Delhi on Facebook.
